One of the best kept secrets in the international Christian music scene is the small but perfectly formed output of Perth, Australia’s Scope Music. This studio-based record label have put out fine releases by jazz crossover band Jive Express and classy pop songstress Kirste, yet have still to attract the attention of Nashville or Eastbourne. Now comes another excellent album by a winsome singer/songwriter Drew Griffith expertly aided by keyboard virtuoso Tom O’Halloran. The songs take in a wide sweep of themes and moods, with the wonders of God’s creation being the cornerstone of several of them while the production by Jive Express’s Paul Mabury brings a jazzy tinge to many of the multi-textured accompaniments. There’s one track, “Mercy”, which, with its surging chorus, sounds like a radio hit while elsewhere the mood, driven by Drew’s huskily emotive voice, is truly haunting. Thinking man’s music which nimbly sidesteps stylistic formula.
