I reviewed Grover's debut for CR and noted two things. The album lacked something and Grover looked like Elvis Costello. For 'Wrestling Angels' I can report that now he sounds like EC and his absolutely cracking songs have a harder edge with jangly guitars prevailing. Not that he can't write wonderful delicate numbers too when he want to, just check out the beauty of "Marrianne" or "Dear God", both spine tinglingly exquisite! "If You Want To Lead Me To Jesus" looks at being evangelised from a non-believer's point of view and offers a realistic kick up the pants to walk the talk. Incisive stuff showing Grovcr is capable of writing tunes that impacl and how! "Part Of Life" is all guitars and driving drums and a Costello-like chorus that's impossible to ignore. In fact these songs cry out for attention -"Tell Us What We Want To Hear" has its understated feedback laden guitar solo coda and the innocuous gentle southern blues 'n' soul swing of "Wander Below" simply hides the sting of an attack on the superficiality of those who are racially prejudiced. 'Wrestling Angels' is the sound of Levy turning into a significant songwriter before my ears. Worth discovering.

I love this cd and lost it! The song "Marrianne" has significant meaning to me. My son is adopted and his birthmother's name is Marrianne. He always listened to this song and thought of her.
