Ever since Rachel Rachel folded back in 1994 we’ve been looking for a full on Christian girl rock band and this foursome from California, following on from their previous ‘The Halo Friendlies’ (1998) album, look like they’ve landed the job. Producer Kim Shattuck wisely keeps the sound gutsy and uncluttered with plenty of full throttle guitars while lead singer Judita Wignall has one of those little-girl-lost voices which can sound saccharine in a teen pop setting but works well when the guitars are belching out hard rhythms around it. Lyrics aren’t going to win any prizes though, “Milwaukee” is a defiant rant at a lost love, “Run Away”, a moan at a guy who doesn’t notice the singer while “Nice Guys” initially sounds like a song suggesting sexual abstinence but turns out to be a moan that the guy’s waiting too long to make his move. Personally I find such banal teen romance obsession coming from four Christian girls to be a little sad. But presumably they know what their audience wants.
