These recordings of Purcell's Anthems and Services just seem to go from strength to strength and the opening track here is performed most excellently by Michael George (bass) with James Bowman (countertenor) and Charles Daniels (tenor). If you haven't discovered Purcell yet then trade two of your old products for this one! The English Orpheus is a title he has really earned with some superb melodies that remain as relevant today - and accessible as they were when they were written. A bonus for this disc is the inclusion of two previously unrecorded works, including the royalist propaganda "The Way Of God Is An Undefiled Way", written after King William's victories on the continent. I wonder how he would have voted on Maastricht... Michael George tackles the other new piece with the mastery that he displays throughout the recording, despite the vocal acrobatics expected by Purcell's score.
