His Voice are a group of young women, based in New York, who have been together for approximately nine years singing the gospel. This, their first release, is a collection of 13 self-penned tracks (including reprises). Best described as a contemporary gospel album, from the opening they hit you with strong lyrics and even stronger harmonies. The good thing about the production is that the vocals are allowed to shine and not be dominated by the music. A good balance with songs that would appeal to a wide audience. The songs are ones of hope and inspiration from the mid-tempo opener of "Jesus You Are" (which gives you an immediate indication of how good the album is) to a similar mid-tempo "Far Away". At times some of the individual lead vocals could have been a little stronger in places, but their strength is undoubtedly as a unit. They even try a little reggae on "Stand Still", which is passable. Better is the Latin-inspired "We Praise You" which with its simple praise lyric really hits the mark. All in all, an impressive debut. At times I could hear influences of the Kurt Carr Singers and even the Richard Smallwood Singers, which is certainly a compliment.
