'A Mighty Fortress' is a selection of hymns for the 'America's 25 Favourite' series arranged for what could be described as a 'Pops' orchestra. 15 hymns are presented on this recording. The title led me to expect a collection of rousing battle calls. While there are moments that are almost rousing, the overall effect is gentler. The music is inoffensive and, if a comparison is necessary, the style is similar to that from Songs Of Praise, a comparison which gives a good indication as to the audience to whom this CD might appeal. It is a good mixture of traditional hymns with music that capture the original style, while bringing it up to date with more contemporary arrangements. Sometimes the music just fails to inspire to the extent that it might; with the slightly laid back recording taking off any strong edges to the music. This is largely due to some sequencing that appears to have been used to fatten up the overall sound of the orchestra. If you desire an instrumental set of hymns, then this one might satisfy. But the All Souls Orchestra it isn't.
