Nice 'n' fiery, recorded live in the hotbed of gospel soul, Jackson, MS, and a meaty slice of that southern deep fry it is too. The choir's sound is strong on that brooding, threatening vocalising that was fertile ground for the advent of soul and blues and which inspired such as Elvis. On a slow, majestic anthem like the 8:59 "The Rocks" the singers ache and moan with a deeply surging rhythm behind one of those soaring soloists that would wake the dead. Their arrangement of the standard "Draw Me Nearer" features a very jazz-flavoured soloist who sounds as though she's had operatic training! She's the sort of singer (unnamed) who produces exhausted listeners. Lots of plain old all-out footstomping joy on display throughout the set, too. Fine choir, merging polish 'n' power for a quality product.
