Any album that features the mighty, mighty Rance Allen as a guest vocalist deserves special attention and sure enough, though Rance’s Stax Records glory days are now past, he adds gutsy fire and some spine-tingling falsetto swoops when he gets to the mic. If you didn’t already know it, Joe Pace’s CMC are one of America’s hottest choirs with some exceptional female lead singers, tight as a drum ensemble work and an ability to drop some modern touches into the timeless call and response fervour. A special delight is the joyful handclapper “Hallelujah Anyhow” while another special guest, Joe Kibble from Take 6, seems to be having a ball. All in all, an exceptional slice of black church excitement.
