This is a budget re-issue of a 1986 recording and as such represents good value for money. André Previn and the RPO take us safely through a challenging work and soloists Margaret Price (soprano) and Samuel Ramey (baritone) are outstanding. As the title suggests, this Requiem is in German rather than Latin but text and translation are provided. Brahms (1833 - 1897) writes with great feeling, following the deaths of his friend Robert Schumann and, later, Brahms's own mother. All who mourn will understand what Brahms is trying to say through his music. Few of us could ever hope to express ourselves as beautifully as he did.
