This is the first-ever album consisting entirely of John Rutter’s orchestral music although much on offer here has its origins in choral pieces. “Distant Land”, for example, was originally written in 1991 as a choral piece inspired by the release of Nelson Mandela. “Five Meditations For Orchestra” are all based on choral pieces: “What Sweeter Music” and “Candlelight” were originally Christmas carols, “Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind” a setting of Shakespeare's poem, “Lord, Make Me An Instrument Of Thy Peace” an anthem to the St Francis of Assisi text, and “The Lord Bless You And Keep You” a simple choral benediction. If you know the originals you cannot help but put in the words. “Suite For Strings” (1971) does the same but with folk songs and the “Beatles Concerto” for two pianos and orchestra has great fun with some well known hits by Lennon, McCartney and Harrison. The pianists are the acclaimed Rostal-Schaefer duo. All the recordings feature the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by John Rutter and the sound quality is excellent throughout. This is not the most profound release of the year but it could well be one of the most melodic and enjoyable.
