For their 18th birthday those nice folk at Naxos have given us a present, for if you take your five-pound note to your CD seller you will receive not only this excellent version of 'The Crucifixion' but also a special compilation of English choral classics. We will not dwell on the 17 tracks from the bonus CD other than to point out that all are British compositions from the 20th century. How does the 19th century composer Sir John Stainer stand up under such a comparison? Remarkably well, it has to be said. 'The Crucifixion' was written at such a level that it should be within the capabilities of most amateur choirs. So yes, it is simple and some critics can be rather condescending towards it but, for this reviewer, melody, harmony and clarity will never go out of fashion. The two soloists, James Gilchrist (tenor) and Simon Bailey (bass) sing very well and the choir is faultless. As a full-price release this would be recommended, as a budget CD it is a bargain and with a free gift as well it must be indispensable. Happy birthday Naxos!
