Not yet 20 years old, Joy is almost a veteran songstress, having composed her first song at the age of 11. She has been a worship leader at her Washington DC church and undertaken a mission trip to Guatemala with her family, has won a GMA Music In The Rockies award (for pop/rock songwriting) and found time to produce this self-titled debut album. It's full of catchy melodies and memorable lyrics drawn from her own experience. The opening track, "Hey There, Stranger" is inspired by her first relationship with a boy and "Too Much To Ask For" is a plaintive cry to her boyfriend to be truthful. Lippard manages to avoid the clichéd teenage angst of so many of her peers in the songwriting world and comes up with a set that is both true to life in its expression and optimistic in its outlook. There are gentle songs of love such as "I Will Write You Letters" and upbeat, rockier numbers such as "It's Your Life". The backing musicians provide a good foundation on which Lippard builds with her strong voice and I'm sure there will be more to come from this gifted young singer.
