Trendy isn’t everything. Take cars. While there are obvious style favourites, there are also alternative cars around which are as reliable and practical and do the job in a comparable, although not necessarily as popular, manner. And so to this CD. My one year old never tires of his erratic, clumsy but enthusiastic dancing to the British Vineyard children’s CDs. Familiar introductions cause him to drop whatever toy he has and begin to dance like a drunken dog on hot coals. Hence I was interested to see how my boy would respond to these two CDs. 40 tracks of new and old songs aimed a pre-school children. The difference here being that they are admirably arranged by a classically trained musician, Julia Plaut, and played on instruments that reflect this. Strings, woodwind, brass and percussion are all here, with varying results. The best songs are those in which the vocal is sung by one of the children involved. Well sung and a great encouragement to these very young and very talented children. Other songs seem to be aimed more at adults –The Boy didn’t respond well to a rather slow, jazz version of “Jesus Loves Me”. And there is a brief cringe-worthy moment when a middle-class sounding Jesus turns up at a child’s front door. On the whole though, an easily overlooked but imposing and constructive CD.
