Deris "Just" Morgan and Courtney "Live" (rhymes with give rather than hive) Richards are two American rappers who are doing things in a slightly old school fashion. There's a deliberate retro feel to this that takes you back to the days of Fresh Prince. The duo create hip-hop which is filled with hooks and their verbal skills are matched by some soulful sung choruses to keep things accessible. Highlights include the fun cut up and rap of "I'm Phresh" which made me laugh out loud. Liquid shows up on "Side 2 Side" and "Friends" is nicely soulful whilst "Since She Cheated On You" features some great vocals from Georgette. "So Ghetto" is. . .well. . .so ghetto in a tongue-in-cheek way with thumping beats and an insistent synth groove. Apart from the obligatory cliché of putting answerphone messages over a beat on "Sweet", this works all the way. Thematically this isn't obvious holy hip-hop so it seems the pair would suit some mainstream action. Is '80s retro back in yet?
