Wigan-based group K2 brings a well produced trance album featuring the programming of Kevin J Herbert, who writes all the music using Cubasis 2 and the Korg Triton synthesizer. Every member, aside from AJ (who produced the album and adds vocals), contributes lyrics to an otherwise synth dominated record. For the most part, vocals don’t pollute the soundscape, but add nicely, often in spoken word, like on “I Reach Out”. Clever loops and creative rhythms sometimes get a little messy, but that’s what happens when the programmer takes over the asylum. This album is surprisingly good for a home recording, but tends to float around quite a bit and never lands on a climax. Some tracks don’t have a constant base structure, and thus gives the opportunity for attention to be lost. I can’t ignore the scripturally based, but cheesy lyrics either. Kevin J Herbert clearly has been programming for a while and has a lot of fun on his Triton synthesiser, which itself seems to have quite a variation of sounds to play with. With nearly 2000 downloads available on different music sites, it might be easier to download Kevin J Herbert and K2 than buy this!
