A debut from Kayte on a new UK label from the Salvation Army arm of the Church. 'Lights On A Hill' showcases a fine voice struggling to sit snuggly on top of a bewildering breadth of material. Some of this works very powerfully as evidenced by the opening "New Day Dawning" where she is backed by Oslo's marvellous Reflex Choir. "Pour On The Power" gives a meaty beat over which Kayte's voice glides and soars. Elsewhere on a selection of more middle of the road ballads, Kayte sounds old fashioned and uncomfortable, especially in the higher register. Ironically "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" - a song as traditional as they come (Actually, it is a copyright song written in the 1920's. Greybeard Cummings) is polished off effectively and her vulnerable version of Chris Eaton's "Breath Of Heaven" has a serene simplicity as she is backed by a solo piano. My fave has to be the cool re-interpretation of Dave Hadden's "I Am Persuaded". A little gem delivered here with a slab of cool sax. I'm ultimately left in two minds because the professionalism of delivery has left these vocals pitch perfect but in places passionless. The more soulful arrangements do breathe a warmth into Kayte's voice. This debut is patchy. Next time Kayte, concentrate on the soul so we can really see what you're made of! This is just a tad TOO safe!

I've got the Lights On A Hill CD and thoroughly enjoy every song, I am Persuaded is one of my favourites too, but I may be a little biased as I know her personally and have seen her, she has a beautiful voice and great personality.
