A barrel-chested gospel belter with a neat line in rasping, gasping exhortation, a tight funky band and a hot choir. There are a couple of big name guests, James Bignon and Darius McCary, the latter famed for hit US TV show Family Matters. All that's really lacking are grade 'A' songs, with too many slow, meandering ballads on this live recording. By the end this reviewer was ready with "great-voice-needing-better-material" observations. But then, tucked away near the end, comes a studio cut, not a live track, and "The Storm Is Passing Over" is a fine cut, a solid R&B groove with a chattering guitar groove, a silky girl chorus and Darius McCary whooping and hollering over the socking groove. Worth investigating for that track alone.
