This is the debut gospel project from a former member of R&B million sellers Color Me Badd. Released in 2005, it's not cutting edge music but it is well rounded, punchy and hits the gut at the right point. The singer attacks his subject, alluding to his old band Color Me Badd in a tune that hooks into the "Jesus Is Just Alright With Me" theme (so neatly once proclaimed by the Doobie Brothers), Kevin's song being called "He's Alright". Sometimes KT, as he used to be known in his days with the band famous in the UK for their number one hit "I Wanna Sex You Up", sounds vocally vulnerable, that's okay though, there's an endearing quality in sounding human. Three years old Mikayla Thornton is featured in one of the songs, "Oh Mommy". She wrote it, performs it and it is irritatingly infectious. It could have made radio playlists and been a hit if it was two minutes longer. Kevin tackles themes that most gospel artists cover but manages to avoid being trite but not by a long way. His enthusiasm for his subject carries him across the dividing wall of easy rhymes verses and good poetry and makes me willing to listen to his message. Neat guitar lines, funky programmed parts, a smattering of R&B, gospel and rock. Time for another one, Kevin.
