A renowned jazzman, much respected in secular jazz circles, brings his soulful saxophone to bear on a set of well known gospel hymns like “Blessed Assurance” and “Wade In The Water”.  The latter also comes with some delicious scat singing from Kirk.  Recorded live and featuring hot sidemen George Duke on keyboards and Paul Jackson Jnr on guitar while interspersed with the extended solo work, there’s a gospel choir occasionally holding forth.  An interesting concept, superbly executed by some of the best jazzmen currently gigging and thankfully a long way from some of those muzak-style “jazz” releases occasionally released by Christian record companies.  If you’re a Whalum fan or want a satisfying jazz gospel fusion check this out.
