What a mellow fellow! Silky late-night soft pop music that's richly textured with cascading instrumentation and neat arrangements. On the negative side, Lawson's songs are pleasant company rather than demanding fare, with somewhat obvious lyrics and tunes that somehow seem a bit weary. The musical and arranging skills of the experienced Dave Cooke contribute greatly to the overall sound. On "Only Believe" Spiller's performance betrays heavy Don Francisco inflections and the attempted soft rock of "Jesus Lives" is again a la DF without that maestro's biting attack. So, a mixed blessing, overall quite acceptable though.
