Put simply, this is the most controversial album Cross Rhythms has ever reviewed. To some believers this concept album by a gifted Miami rapper will be an affront, both in its street language with its incessant talk of niggahs and whores and its aggressive, even violent, attacks on the stars of the hip-hop industry. To others it will be a fresh and radical expression of spiritual militancy for a corrupt and perverted generation. A series of raps directed at the major rap stars interspersed with “talk radio interviews” where the rapper speaks of “God’s anger at some of the records being put out” and rubbishes the rappers with their sick songs of drive-by shootings and gang bangs. He pulls absolutely no punches with songs like “Fix 50 Cent Teeth” and “Missy You Wildin’ It” while elsewhere on “Be My Lady” the rapper tells Beyonce that “the Devil’s got you in his loop”, on “White Boy” tells Eminem that “we can’t have no white president in the hip-hop world, that’s the only thing they gave us” and on “Pumps Off” proclaims to Lil Kim “you ain’t nothin’ but a high class nympho.” Such lyrics, coupled with “How To Use A Gun” where Legacy admits carrying a gun for self-protection, will be beyond the pale for many. But this is a rapper who’s already received death threats because of his militant proclamations. And on tracks here like “I Worship” and “The Jesus”, few would deny that he’s a full on soldier for Christ. In one of those radio interviews he states this album is “not for the Church but for the streets.” It will be fascinating to see what the hip-hop industry at large makes of it.
