Consisting of husband and wife duo Chris and Michelle Hall, Liv'in'Proof are a pop-rock outfit based in Château-Gontier, France. This 10 track CD offers a mixture of self-penned French and English language cuts. With a post punk, pop vibe that is at times reminiscent of The B-52s the duo switch between rock and acoustic tracks throughout. Chris is obviously a talented guitarist and produces a raft of catchy licks on his acoustic guitar which are underpinned by warm bass lines. Less convincing are the more rock focused tracks such as "9 To 5" which contain a few too many power chords and end up seeming a little one-dimensional. Having said this, there are some phrases that immediately work their way under your skin and highlight the fact that Chris can write a catchy melody. "You Are My Rock" which reprises in French is one such track that sticks in your head. I personally preferred the French tracks which seemed to suit Michelle's vocals better and the scan of the lyrics did not seem as awkward as on the English language songs. One track I would have to pick out is "Je Crois" with its funky, jazz influenced strumming and the bluesy "Dark Friday" is almost as good. I can imagine this duo being very effective in the setting of a house concert where their acoustic sound would complement the intimate surroundings.
