With the tragic loss of Gene Eugene many wondered whether the other three rock music veterans – Mike Rowe, Derri Daugherty and Terry Scott Taylor – would continue their delicious alt country side project. But in fact, as witness this superb album of simple songs of faith, many based on the Psalms, the Dogs are now producing their best ever work. There are so many wonderful moments – the Terry Scott Taylor-led “Be My Hiding Place” with its delicate harmonies, the Derri Daugherty-fronted acoustic “Jesus On The Shore” with its memorable (“Be free brethren”) chorus and Mike Rowe’s delightful country rock contributions. As good as any Americana album Mojo swoon over, ‘Nazarene Crying Towel’ (the strange title explained in a fascinating narrative sleevenote) deserves wide exposure.
