North Wales-based singer/songwriter Mark describes his work as "anthems of hope for the hurting, tired and vulnerable" and his latest release is certainly no exception. Containing 10 cautiously optimistic acoustic pop songs, it's hard to get away from the fact that Pierce sounds exactly like fellow troubadour James Blunt - especially with song titles like "Too Beautiful" - but there is no doubting that Pierce is a talented songwriter (and singer) with a gentle style that reaches deep into the heart. Songs such as the opener "Some Place New" and "Gold In These Hills" betray a yearning to keep moving and are delivered in a fashion that draws the listener in whilst the likes of "Face The Sun", "Sing", the aforementioned "Too Beautiful" and "Flower In The Summer Sun" expertly suggest hope amongst struggle and brokenness. For the most part, Pierce keeps direct references to his faith up his sleeve with the exception of the more obvious "Life Of Miracles" but songs such as the punchy "Back Where I Belong" hint at spiritual matters without being too specific - allowing his work to appeal to both mainstream and Christian audiences. Backed by what sounds like a great band who deliver some deft touches throughout, this is a strong set from the talented Mr Pierce and very possibly the greatest album James Blunt never made.
