If you're a folk roots buff you'll know that Martin Simpson is one of the finest guitar pickers in the world today, a consummate talent able to get the warmest and subtlest sounds from his trusty acoustics (and the mandola and mandolins he also plays here). 'A Closer Walk With Thee' is an exploration of American hymnody. Some you will know ("Wayfaring Stranger", "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", "I'll Fly Away"), others, often quite beautiful, we have Martin to thank for rescuing from the obscurity of ancient hymnals. With fine fiddle, harmonica, banjo etc the whole album exudes the luminous strength of America's pioneering churches. If you enjoy the popular 'Smoky Mountain' album series, you'll definitely enjoy the superlative playing of Martin Simpson and friends.
