The unfortunately named Sapp is best known for his work with Commissioned and for this debut solo album he hasn't travelled too far from home as Fred Hammond produces this effort. Sapp has relied heavily on Fred's songwriting input as well as the songs of fellow producer Percy Brady. The sweetest soul and fabbiest of funk combine to highlight the man's gorgeous voice. "Close To You" shows smoothy Sapp gliding over the prayer to stay near to God. "In His Presence" and "Reign Jesus Reign" are more up tempo and uplifting. The vocal contribution of the Joy Crusade Chorale on the former song make it a real solid slab of gospel and joy is the right word for it! "Calling Me" is slow funk of the highest calibre. The Percy Brady penned acoustic "Use me" gives Sapp the opportunity to indulge in a passionate performance alongside some close harmonies. It seems that no matter what style he tackles, Sapp has a knack of hitting it just right. This is classy stuff, immediately accessible but with enough musical depth to maintain interest. Fans of Commissioned (and there are many) should rush to their nearest stockist and enjoy.
