Ernest Lough of the Temple Choir in London was the Aled Jones of his age, a choir boy whose other-worldly soprano voice wrenched him from the obscurity of the church choir to international recording acclaim. In 1927 HMV, having invested in its very first mobile unit, sent it to record the Temple Choir and one of the designated soloists was 15 year old Lough. The rest, as they say, was record industry history. The 78 of Mendelssohn's "Hear My Prayer (Oh For The Wings Of A Dove)" went on to sell a million copies, if you count the re-recording of the song made the following year. This classic and the other recordings here from the repertoire of Handel, Schubert (the far from sacred "Who Is Sylvia" and "Hark Hark The Lark") and Brahms are all enjoyable. The ethereal beauty of Master Ernest's voice still shines through on this lovingly compiled CD (which includes a newly discovered test pressing of his huge hit). When his voice broke Ernest returned to the choir as a baritone and made many broadcasts. But it's the timeless beauty of those first recordings that will be always loved by a generation.

I have had this CD for many years. I heard him on radio when I was young- about 1940s.
The quality of hi svoice is extraordinary. It is the way he projects the sound that is so special. He has learnt to pronounce words like Pray-er perfectly. It is a pity about the sound of the men and the somewhat hunourous was of pronouncing -"shout-eTH"
Overall it is still a 'MusT HAVE' cd

I was a contemporary choirboy with Ernest Lough. In all the years since, I have heard no better treble than Ernest, even Aled is only second to him! His "I know that my Redeemer liveth" is the best performance of his whole repertoire. Let's re-issue this remarkable singer so today's generation can hear what real trebles sound like!

Just happened to run across this while on the WEB. Is this by chance the Rev. Frank Collier that was a minister at Norview Presbyterian Church quite a few years ago? If so, would like to hear from you. I'm Minnie Nelson's daughter-in-law. If this is the Rev Collier that used to be at Norview PC then you'll remember Minnie. E-mail me if you are the same person. Or could someone from this site forward my e-mail address to Rev. Collier?
