'Intimacy' is one of the most successful albums in the history of British Christian music so following it up was always going to be a challenge. Like its predecessor, 'The Father's Song' succeeds as an album that touches and stirs the listener, however I continue to wonder how many of these songs will make it into general congregations across the UK. That's not to decry what is an excellent inspiring album. "Take The World But Give Me Jesus" is a memorable title and a memorable upbeat opening and we're off on a worship journey. It takes us through the gospel flavoured "Light Of The World" (one of three songs featuring LCGC) to "Sacred King" which has the vibe of being "When I Needed A Saviour" Pt 2. Other contributions include some guitar from Stu G and mixing from Martin Smith. There's also a duet with American band Sonicflood (if one can duet with a whole band!) and the result of that collaboration is the catchy energetic pop rock "Holy Moment". "Justice & Mercy" sees Matt addressing the need for our worship not to be simply the singing of songs but a Gospel with actions in wider society. "You Must Increase" and "Let My Words Be Few" are both humble approaches to worship that are healthy reminders of our need for the respect of the awe of God's presence. The title song is one of the most moving of Mart's career with its observation that we have a God who sings over us - how much we need to hear that song in our lives. This is a top album, well executed and well written. However its one weakness is perhaps in trying to be all things to all men. Whilst trying to record songs for the broad Church, Matt is in danger of losing his constituency amongst the youthy end of things. The album I long for is the one where he throws caution to the wind and does something brightly contemporary. Until then, this will do!
