Mike Knott has been a leading light for some years in the Christian college (UK readers read "alternative") scene, most notably with Lifesavers Underground, a pseudo-goth rock band. This album is of a more laid-back style with the sort of semi-talking vocals and quirky observations about people and life that Lou Reed first made famous with "Walk On The Wild Side". "Kitty" is probably the strangest song recalling childhood fears of eccentric people. Mike is scared of his neighbour being a cannibal. A sense of humour is essential but this song is unlikely to ever be covered by Carman! "Serious " is about suicide and appears to refer to Kurt Cobain and the grunge scene in general, and lapses into grunge itself. Many of the references in the songs are obscure, at least, to me, but won't stop you enjoying them. Fans of Dream Syndicate (does anyone know if Steve Wynn is a Christian?) and Lou or Crash Test Dummies' "Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm" would do well to pick this up, but readers wanting something to directly evangelise their friends won't find anything of use here.
