'Bourbon Blue' is Michael McDermott's fourth album, released back in 1999. It features his signature blend of rock and roots to create a collection of superb songs that mix the punch the air uplifting ("20 Miles From Nowhere", "Jezebel") with the introspective reflective ballads ("My Sweet Rapier", "Murder On Her Lips"). As always there are comparisons to be made with Dylan and Springsteen who are brought to mind by the passion and lyrical wit on these songs. Favourites for me are the realism of "Days That Try Your Patience" and the energy of the title cut which for some reason is an uncredited hidden song. Whoever thought of naming an album after an uncredited song? Weird! As with all his releases, McDermott delivers outstanding songwriting dressed in passionate '90s rock and it's a winner all the way.
