In the beginning , in the early '90s Michael McDermott was touted as the new Springsteen and it's because he's one passionate performer and he loves to mix up his roots and rock influences to produce albums which are always good and occasionally fantastic. I discovered Michael after he played Greenbelt a few years back and immediately went out and bought as much of his back catalogue as I could find! This latest release sees him embark on a less angst ridden course than on some of his previous releases, maybe he's seen off the worst of his demons. So, let's see. highlights? There are two versions of the brilliant, vulnerable "So Am I" and "The Ballad Of Johnny Diversey" continues to demonstrate his skill in using a song to tell a story. (It's another trait that'll get him Springsteen comparisons)! "Hard To Break" features lead vocals from Kate York and is a mesmerising catchy song while the emotive "The Year It All Went Wrong" has the authentic feel of a man who's been schooled by life's experiences. And if it continues to inspire a set of songs like these I'll be worried if he gets too happy! For now though, this is one of rock music's most unappreciated talents.
