Reviewed by Trevor Kirk The advances in the fields of urban gospel, hip hop and rap over the last 10 years have been quite awesome. A decade ago, when dc Talk and other purveyors of the genre, both secular and sacred, were getting into their stride, rap as a musical style was on the whole pretty formulaic, with some rather one-dimensional MCs doin' their thing over repetitive synth beds. These days ETW, Gospel Gangstas, T-Bone, GRITS and others have taken rap and hip hop to new heights. Sadly, Ministers Of The Gospel seem to be stuck back at the end of the '80s. It's a shame, because they've got something to say, they just need a different way of saying it. The interview sequences come over as decidedly cheesy; the special tribute to Mom is pure saccharine, and the BPM rate seems to be constant throughout, which makes for monotony. MOTG could do worse than do some research in the Gotee Brothers How-To-Hip-Hop Manual, and get up to date.
