Fourteen well-known hymns as featured in the BBC TV series Sweet Inspirations, sung by Moira Kerr and arranged, accompanied and produced by Ian Lynn. No great surprises in the selection other than the Wesleys not being represented. The most popular composer is Trad. I must confess that when this CD arrived I thought I knew exactly what I would be hearing: yet another 'sing-along songs of praise' with some great hymns being reduced to dull cliches. Grit the teeth, listen to it once and then give it to granny. Well, I wuz wrong. Ian Lynn is to be applauded for some imaginative arrangements which breathe in new life to some genuine favourites. Moira Kerr sings well and clearly which allows the lyrics to speak for themselves. The backing tracks remind me of some of Tom Howard's work and would bear hearing in their own right. Dominic Ashworth provides some pleasant acoustic guitar. Several tracks have a Celtic/Gaelic feel to them. The acapella introduction to "Stand Up, Stand Up For Jesus" shows that Moira Kerr and Ian Lynn can sing: vocalists cannot hide when singing unaccompanied! They then manage to work in a funky bass line and a nifty key change. The Sally Army it ain't! This is a more than competent first venture into inspirational music by Moira Kerr. I enjoyed it so much that I am going to keep it. Sorry granny. Perhaps I'll buy you a copy for Christmas...
