Even before Enigma brought the haunting sound of the Gregorian Chant into the pop charts I've long been a lover of what I consider one of the most haunting sounds in religious music. Now this beautifully recorded (digital no less) album gives you the authentic article, ethereal male voices intoning in Latin in their own natural reverb unit (called a monastery). Vespers is traditionally sung when the day's work is finished and the four psalms with their very ancient antiphons begin, followed by the truly beautiful hymn "Lucis Creator Optime", dating from the sixth or seventh century. After Vespers there's the Benediction, with another lovely hymn "Adoro Te Devote" and compline (sung at the very end of the day) where the "Salve Regina", composed in the eleventh century, is followed by the Angelus bell. Beautiful music for contemplation.
