A lot of thought and research has gone into this recording which sets Morales' mass against the work of Jean Mouton whose own work inspired it. It's the musical equivalent of the Times cryptic crossword, as Morales so finely weaves Mouton's work into his own that it takes a trained ear to detect it. It is a subtle and exquisitely crafted tribute to the French composer whose melody "Noe, Noe" (Noel, Noel) was a pop standard of its time. The Westminster Choir under the direction of James O'Donnell bring all the weight of their experience to bear on the works, set in the majestic reverb of the cathedral and with a lovely use of dynamics on the Mouton work.
