This Perth, Australia based outfit has at times consisted of up to six musicians, however its backbone consists of vocalist Mel Crothers and producer/musician Gavin Kerr. Together they have released a pretty good debut album. Neolight describe themselves as electro-pop with jazz influences, which pretty much sums them up. I was reminded more than once of an early Phatfish sound blended with a singer sounding a bit like Riki Michele. A heavy bass line features throughout, tying things together, with layers of keys bringing to mind an '80s pop sound. Memories of the days' legwarmers fight to make it into my head as I listen, but a pastiche is avoided by the inclusion of some vibrant, current arrangements. After three sing along pop tracks that are all upbeat a much more jazz influenced "Pleasing You" is more laid back. Throughout the recording real life issues are tackled and interpreted from a positive faith perspective. Neolight have had some success in reviving a sound from the past and adding their own spin to original tracks.
