Scotland has produced many fine bands and soloists down the years and ever since the buzz created by this fine team’s ‘Ocean Air’ EP in 1996 a full scale album has been much anticipated. The precise style of Nervous Passenger is hard to pin down. One can detect elements of the acoustic driven vibe of a Crowded House though it would be inaccurate to suggest that this band’s evocative melodies, lyrical images and air of wistful poignancy have much to do with any other act. What makes Nervous Passenger so intriguing is the intelligence of their songwriting while in Neil Alton they have one of the most original lead singers in Christendom, a voice that is all but impossible to describe though with its gritty air of pathos it pulls the listener into the centre of each song. Classy artwork is an added bonus and this reviewer is compelled to recommend one of the most engaging left-of-centre CDs to come through the wonderful world of independents.
