Following a well-received demo release, Nth Ascension, who hail from Lancashire, now issue their first official recording. This is true progressive rock that harps back to a bygone era, but brings its own twist to the table. Influences of '70s rockers Yes can certainly be heard as synths swirl and fill a complex and engaging mix of sounds. Alan Taylor's distinctive vocals add a haunting edge, not unlike Fish from Marillion. "Fourth Kingdom" opens with a hard scything guitar riff which gives way to a wash of vocal harmonies, whilst "Return Of The King" is heralded by layers of keyboard work before a guitar soars in melodic fashion. The album clearly displays the songwriting skills of this team, particularly in the two epics that push the recording further into the progressive realm. The album closes with the most engaging track on offer. Coming in at over 18 minutes, "Vision" moves between all-out driving rock and reflective soundscapes, demonstrating a range of influences. Production is clear and crisp, but at times I felt as though this recording deserved a more voluptuous and indulgent depth when it seemed a little thin. Whilst this is not a recording for all rock enthusiasts - prog often anchors itself in a dated sound - 'Ascension Of Kings' will certainly please listeners who enjoy the drama of classic rock with a twist.
