Reviewed by Trevor Kirk

West Bromwich's resident troubador has decided to give his wry and quirky roots/blues a rest for this project, and instead shows us his virtuosity on various sorts of guitar, with Chris Smith on keyboards,a nd Roy Johnson (who apparently has a budgie that thinks it's a dive-bomber) on bass. The title of course refers to the incidents in 1 Samuel, where King Saul was troubled by an evil spirit and David got his first non-sheep related employment by playing the harp to help him relax. The material ranges from 'It Is No Secret', 'And Can It Be', 'Majesty' and 'Standing In the Need of Prayer' to Hosanna Music, Noel Richards, Jessy Dixon and Heartbeat, in a variety of styles, from laid-back jazz to rootsy up tempo, but always with excellent technique, and even more importantly, with feeling. Too many instrumental projects are sterile and soulless; this is alive, and all the better for it.
