Petra were, of course, Christian rock pioneers who produced music for a grand total of 31 years from 1974-2005. If you have never heard their music this is a perfect opportunity as this double pack consists of material from Petra's main two eras - the first of these running from 1977-1985 with Greg X Volz as vocalist and the second running from 1986-2005 with frontman John Schlitt. Both men have a fantastic vocal range and power, although their styles are quite different. One of Petra's most enduring characteristics was their bold and uncompromising lyrics, suffused with Godliness and a very direct message. Highlights of the 1982 'More Power To Ya!' are the poignant "Judas' Kiss", equating each time we sin to yet another nail or Judas' kiss, and the equally challenging "Rose Coloured Stained Glass Windows", a challenge to churches who ignore the pain of the world around while shut up safely in their church buildings. 1987's 'This Means War' is devoted to spiritual warfare and encompasses Satan's fall from Heaven in the anthemic title song, the Christian life in most of the others and Jesus' return in "All The King's Horses". The sound is, of course, a tad dated, but as either an introduction to Petra or an economic way to replace old vinyl, this re-issue is good value for money.
