One still remembers the awed excitement that greeted the 1984 release of Phil's 'The Wonders Of His Love'. Here at last was a gospel album that exuded the same kind of glitzy soul music class that post-disco black music had adopted and such was the quality of the songs, the smooth funkiness of the production and the superlative quality of Phil's head-to-the-sky vocals that it put in the shade all but the very best Earth Wind And Fire classics. Phil has never been able to quite repeat the effect with subsequent soul-gospel albums and though 'Triumph' and 'Family Affair' both have some fine stuff they're decidedly flawed. So this compilation which pulls together the best cuts from all three albums and puts them on a spanking new CD is to be more than welcome. From that so-catchy lilter "He Don't Lie" through to the extended re-mix of "Thank You", this is a fine album which will no doubt be blessing the Cummings family for a decade to come.
