Berkshire-based Philippa is an established singer/songwriter having performed with many other artists at various venues and festivals. 'Sooner Or Later' is her debut release and is a short set of six acoustic songs. Philippa possesses a great voice and has a good ear for a melody while all the songs have been deftly arranged. All the songs show a similar, laid back feel; think Eddi Reader or Nick Drake, nothing is rushed or up tempo. This is an EP to be listened to on a late summer's afternoon, while the sun sets low behind the trees. Lyrically the themes are not overtly religious, but there is an obvious spiritual element to the writing. To me the lyrics are the main problem, some of the lines coming across either as too simplistic or clichéd (eg, the opening line of the title track: "Life is a roller coaster, with all its ups and downs"). But overall, this is a promising solo debut for Philippa and I hope that as she continues to hone her songwriting skills that future releases will realise her obvious potential.
