This six track EP is the third release from the North Carolina-based four piece. Where it differs from Philmont's previous releases - 2008's 'Oh Snap' EP and 2009's full length debut, 'Attention' - is that the group are now without a record deal and 'The Transition EP' has been financed purely by donations from fans. Those kind supporters are certainly not going to be disappointed as this project builds upon the rather one dimensional pop punk of Philmont's earlier releases and displays previously unheard levels of maturity and songwriting craft. Opening track "I Am" is punky and energetic and is going to be the most familiar to those who loved the band's earlier work but elsewhere on this EP the group seem determined to display their versatility. "You Will Remain" slows the pace down a little and has a supremely melodic chorus while "Ringing In My Head" is a classy Jars Of Clay style pop rocker. The EP closes with the tender, acoustic-based "The Last Song I Sing" with an uncharacteristically sweet vocal from Scott Taube. Judging by this fine CD it's not going to be the last we hear from Philmont.
