After starting with a flourish, the record label Deeper Well, emanating from the Portland, Oregon church run by the hugely talented pastor, singer and songwriter Josh White, has gone strangely quiet. So I'm not sure whether this album, released during their first burst of activity, is still available. Let's hope it is. 'Pilgrim' features the prolific songsmith not in either of his usual roles as a powerful purveyor of rock worship (ie, Telecast) or a gripping acoustic songsmith, but as a clever EDM man. With a bit of trip hop, a dash of techno and quite a lot of old style new wave, Josh shows himself to be able to handle synth-driven music with aplomb and as another Cross Rhythms reviewer observed, the haunting "Only Your Presence" would fit neatly into any summer festival.
