An interesting concept: take some hymns and arrange them for symphony orchestra. Also, someone had the idea of including a choir, Ars Nova. This must have led to some difficult decisions. If Ars Nova sing the words to all 11 hymns, what happens to Paul Terracini's orchestration? But if the words are omitted, do we have hymns? So compromises are made. Sometimes only one stanza is sung, as in "Crown Him With Many Crowns". For "When I Survey The Wondrous Cross" we hear just the first couplet. Only two hymns are sung in their entirety: "The King Of Love" is performed acapella, which showcases the vocal ability of Ars Nova. The other song done in full is Darlene Zschech's "Shout To The Lord" which, frankly, does not sit well in such exalted company. But do not let my reservations deter you from listening to this collection. These are great hymns, imaginatively arranged and beautifully played and sung.
