Authentic Media have brought together some really outstanding instrumentalists here, headed up by Robin Thompson-Clarke on cello, to perform 14 instrumental versions of popular worship songs. The result is never really what you'd call background music - the cello's sound is too rich and the accompaniment necessarily too loud for that - but I was a touch disappointed that the arrangers have stuck so solidly to the middle of middle-of-the-road. This CD fulfils its marketing brief exactly: it's pleasant, tuneful and recognisable, played impeccably. It just doesn't do anything more, and becomes a tad dull as a result.
