If you're into music trivia, how about this for a question? What is the most recorded band in the world? The answer are the brass band icons The Black Dyke Band who have clocked up over 150 years of musical history. This recording showcases cornet virtuoso Richard Marshall who has released three successful solo recordings of his own. Now as principal of the Black Dyke Band, the album fulfils Richard's dream to become the ensemble's principal cornet player. Contained here are two duets, the lively "Dot And Carrie", where he is joined by James Shepherd and the beautiful "Mac And Mort". The latter in particular shows the quality of what is on offer on this disc. The potential variety of the band and the beauty of the cornet instrument are illustrated best on that plaintive Neil Sedaka ballad, once popularised by The Carpenters, "Solitaire". My only complaint (and it is only a minor one), is that some more well known material like this, would have attracted a wider audience. However, 'The Cornet Heritage Collection Vol 1' is an example of exemplary musical talent.
