From acid jazzers to brooding funky power-poppers in just three EPs is quite a feat! But then that David Evans has a lot to answer for! River Deep made a big impression at last year's Cross Rhythms festival both in their own performances and when they acted as backing band for Australia's Evans and the experience of playing more rocky material has impacted their own style. This new EP sees them discovering a new musical identity. This release was only intended as a demo but the band were so proud of their efforts in their own little home studio that they decided to share them with you! And I am glad they did! Just 4 songs but what scorchers! From the portentous opening of 'Millennium Falling' with its sinister sci-fi synths, it's clear that River Deep have found a fresh groove and this is the sound of a band coming of age. 'Just A Man' is built on a groovy bass riff with Esther's voice floating and diving while Sam Mirren's ethereal guitar adds plenty of texture. 'Total Silence' is just cool as it shuffles along a classy groove. The closing 'Forever (In Your Arms)' is just another example of how the band is capable of fusing together the perfect groove, a compelling arrangement and a memorable vocal performance. Bit of an epic really! All this is very well but ultimately 'Millennium Falling' is simply a tasty appetiser and I for one have my eyes on the main course. Surely it's time for a River Deep album that sums up the band's huge talents. Until then this is on repeat play!
