I'm familiar with the use of the trombone as a lead or ensemble instrument, be it trad jazz or the wonderful Rico blowing in Jools Holland's band. But gospel trombone - now there's a new genre on me. But Baltimore-based Robin Harris started playing her's at school and church, and has toured the States and Europe. This, Robin's second recording of gospel standards, displays her beautiful tone and on many tracks some great guest vocalists. If there is a problem, it's when the trombone and the vocalists compete. But where they dovetail or the track is instrumental, then the result is mellow and uplifting. Production values are inevitably modest, but if you can live with that and enjoy gospel music, then this CD is a rewarding surprise.
