Rojo are the most popular Christian rock band in Latin America, and 'Día de Independencia' is proof that they deserve the multiple accolades they have received - this album rocks! Their previous effort, '24/7' was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2004, and has gone Gold in various countries. 'Día de Independencia' is a more than worthy successor to that record. From catchy, bouncy tunes to rough 'n' ready rock, from contemplative worship to passionate stadium anthems, these fine musicians never cease to please. Now based in Houston, Texas, they tour all around the Spanish-speaking USA and Latin America, most recently to Mexico, Nicaragua and Venezuela. There are all sorts of influences here: track three pays homage to the best Spanish band ever, Mecano; track four develops over a baseline similar to Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up"; the opening bars of track six seem to be heading into a Delirious? song, only to then turn into Roxette (and soon add a synthesised voice section very like Ultravox); track nine uses a drum pattern reminiscent of the opening of "Close To The Edge", by Yes; track 10 pays tribute to their Mexican roots by introducing a Mariachi band feel! But all of this is under girded by an unfailing musical instinct, and a very authentic voice. This is an album that can happily sit side by side with any contemporary music record, whether Christian or secular... and there are even two phantom tracks, unlisted at the end of track 11, which are an added treat. So go on, buy this album and expand your musical horizons!
